What is Gestalt modality?It’s a holistic, existential therapy approach that focuses on exploring the person’s mind. In other words, it’s a relational approach to finding new ways to cope with things that bother you. I like this explanation by the UK therapy association, although it is somewhat vague. In practice, in comparison to CBT, Gestalt therapy does not involve instructions or homework. The method assumes that an individual has all the answers within themselves. Through conversations with the therapist, inner exploration leads to life changes. There is no “inner child/parent split”, blaming of parents or any other special emphasis. You may expect exploration of metaphors, suggestion of play-like exercises, or to fantasise about, say, a perfect day. I am specialised in the body-oriented approach in Gestalt therapy. This means occasional attention to bodily sensations, but no physical contact. |
