english speaking therapist amsterdam

Gestalt Counsellor and a former IT specialist

I am Yulia Belozerova, and I specialise in body-oriented Gestalt therapy for expats and IT folks in Amsterdam.

After 15 years in IT Project Management, I graduated as a Gestalt Counsellor, and I'm currently a Gestalt therapist in training.

I work in Russian and English. We would meet online via Zoom or offline in my office in Amsterdam.

December 2025: No waiting list

In therapy, I can help with...

These are topics I usually encounter. But we can always unpack other themes.
  • Expat's themes

Difficult emotions and anxiety when moving to another country. Cultural differences.
  • Psychosomatics

Sleep issues, odd skin problems, panic attacks and other stuff that doctors don't take seriously
  • Significant life-events

Even a bunch of positive changes can also feel like a crisis
  • Neurodiversity and more

It is not easy to be different, also if you are recently diagnosed with ADHD, autism or bipolar
  • Relations with others

Especially when you find yourself in a healthy relationship after years of having difficulties. However, I don't do couples therapy
My story
Growing up in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, I left the country in 2015. I first worked and studied in London, then moved to the Netherlands in 2019.

I always studied part-time, next a full-time job in IT. I worked as a Senior Technical Program Manager in Big Tech for a total of 15 years. At some point, I found my calling: "Inspire people for a positive change".

Fast forward five years, and that led me to become a Gestalt therapist — I enjoy helping others grow. I've been working with clients in Gestalt therapy since February 2023.
  • Psychotherapy education
    • 2022-2025: Gestalt practitioner at RGI / Gestalt Counsellor & Gestalt Coach at NSG
    • 2024: Specialised in body-oriented psychotherapy at RGI
    • 2025-2026: Gestalt therapist at NSG
    • 2025: Medical & Psychology basic knowledge (PSBK)

For 3 years, I studied Gestalt therapy at Riga's Gestalt Institute, while being based in Amsterdam — flying for every module. The studies gave me a solid base to work with clients. Currently, I am finishing the last part of the Gestalt training at a Dutch Gestalt institute and will fully graduate in September 2026.
  • General education
    • 2018: Certified as PMP at PMI
    • 2016: Certifed as Advanced SCRUM-master in SAFe 4.5
    • 2021: BSc in Management and Digital Innovation at UoL&LSE
    • 2024: MSc in Management Studies at UvA
    • 2025-ongoing PhD in psychotherapy impact on careers at VU
In practice, my BSc was in management and business. Masters — in organisational psychology and HRM. The ongoing PhD project merges my business experience with my passion for psychotherapy.
  • Experience
I spent 15 years in IT project management, mostly in FinTech, Cloud and Compliance domains. More details on my LinkedIn.

For 5 years, I've been teaching project management to private groups and MSc students at MFTI, in my author's course (in Russian)

I have 6 years of private 1:1 consulting on career development, job search and relocations.
  • Memberships
As a Gestalt Counsellor and therapist in training, I am accredited by the EAGT and NVAGT. This means I adhere to the universal principles outlined in Gestalt therapy's Code of Ethics. I am also a member of LGTA and UKAGP. This ensures my ongoing professional development and compliance with the relevant regulations.

What I do

I can not exclude my previous professional experience from Gestalt therapist identity. Therefore, there are multiple ways we can collaborate.

  • Conversational therapy
    Gestalt Therapy
This is my main passion. I enjoy working one-to-one, and I do not offer group therapy or couples therapy. I am not a clinical psychologist.

You may find it useful that I had a career before I became a therapist. If you are coming from the IT or banking industry, I can relate to many struggles in the work environment. This also means I can support you by suggesting resources to address practical professional problems, i.e. time management or relations with colleagues.
  • Project management training
    Education projects
In parallel to therapy, I spend a lot of time doing academic research in the scope of my PhD. I study the impact of therapy on career decision-making. Besides, I have been teaching MSc students for five years. Therefore, I would be happy to conduct a training or teach at a university.

Potential topics: project management, anything about Agile & Scrum, soft skills, negotiations, navigating conflicts, time management, and anything in between.
  • Expat support group
    Expat support groups
Being an expat myself, I resonate with the troubles when changing countries. I lived in two countries abroad and (almost) moved to the other two — spent a few months there to see if it could be a place to move. The places: Portugal, Belarus, California, and London.

The practical difficulties, identity shift, and culture differences can be a topic in therapy. However, I am developing a lighter format: an online support group for expats, which won't be a therapy group. Stay tuned!
  • Career development
    One-off consultations: mentoring
Reach out to me if you are not interested in therapy, but still want to talk about your struggles that are:

    • Expat's life or culture differences
    • Relocations, job search, feedback on your CV
    • All things project management
    • Work-context relations with others
    • Career crisis, i.e. where to go / grow next
    • Becoming a project manager
I have been doing this for over five years. Note: If I see that there is something to address in therapy, I will flag it for you, but we won't go deep into such material.
Expectations management
As a therapist, I do my best to support my clients throughout their therapeutic process. However, it is the client's responsibility to make life choices. Therefore, I cannot guarantee changes in the issues brought up in our sessions.

What is Gestalt modality?

It’s a holistic, existential therapy approach that focuses on exploring the person’s mind. In other words, it’s a relational approach to finding new ways to cope with things that bother you.

I like this explanation by the UK therapy association, although it is somewhat vague. In practice, in comparison to CBT, Gestalt therapy does not involve instructions or homework. The method assumes that an individual has all the answers within themselves.

Through conversations with the therapist, inner exploration leads to life changes. There is no “inner child/parent split”, blaming of parents or any other special emphasis.

You may expect exploration of metaphors, suggestion of play-like exercises, or to fantasise about, say, a perfect day. I am specialised in the body-oriented approach in Gestalt therapy. This means occasional attention to bodily sensations, but no physical contact.
